Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about ordering, care, and craftsmanship.
How long does it take to make a pipe?
Every pipe I make is crafted by hand from the very beginning. That means there is no
fixed “assembly line schedule”, but a process shaped by the material, the shape, the
finish, and the final refinement each piece needs. Some pipes feel “right” sooner,
others need more time until everything truly fits, inside and out.
As a general guideline: in many cases, the making time is about 4 to 8 weeks. If you
have very specific wishes or if my order book is currently busy, it can take longer.
I tell you clearly in advance what the current status is and keep you up to date. It
matters to me that you do not just wait, but that you can look forward to something
that truly suits you in the end.
How do I care for my pipe properly?
A pipe does not reward good care with “perfection”, but with character and with a better
smoking experience over many years. After each smoke, you should tap it out carefully
and give it a basic clean. Running a pipe cleaner through the smoke channel is often
already half the job. Above all, one thing matters: patience. Give the pipe time to dry
completely again.
A good rule of thumb is at least 24 hours of rest - more if you smoke it frequently, or
alternate with a second pipe. For regular care, good pipe cleaners, a soft cloth, and
an occasional gentle deep clean are enough. If you are unsure, just ask me - I will tell
you specifically what makes sense for your pipe and what you are better off avoiding.
Can I bring in my own wishes?
Yes! And that is often how the most beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces are created. You can
bring your ideas for shape, size, finish, material, or even small details.
At the same time, I will advise you honestly on what makes sense and what does not.
Some ideas look great on paper, but do not work as expected when smoking or in the
hand.
In the end, my goal is a pipe that is not only “your wish”, but also harmonious in
craftsmanship, well balanced, and consistently good to smoke. If you already have
pictures or inspiration, feel free to send them along. And if you do not yet have a
clear idea, we will find it together.
Do you ship abroad?
Yes, I also ship abroad and generally worldwide. It matters to me that your pipe arrives
safely, so I pack it carefully and choose shipping that is reliable.
Shipping costs depend on the destination country and the shipping method and are
calculated individually. If you tell me your country, you will receive a clear quote in
advance on costs and the process.
What are your pipes made from?
I work primarily with briar wood because it has proven itself as pipe wood over decades.
It is heat-resistant, durable, and develops its own depth over time. Depending on the
pipe and the design, other materials may also be used, for example for the stem or for
design accents.
What matters to me is this: the material should not only look beautiful, it should also
work. A pipe is a companion. For that, it must be stable, cleanly crafted, and
harmonious in itself.
Do you also restore old pipes?
Yes. If a pipe still has solid substance, careful restoration is often very worthwhile.
This is not about making everything “new”, but about cleaning the piece, stabilizing it,
and bringing it back to a condition where it feels good again, both to look at and to
smoke.
The best way is to send me a few photos and a short note about what bothers you or what
you would like. I will tell you honestly whether restoration makes sense and how I would
approach it. See also my Estate page.
